Maxx242 created a little write-up about his and Munk One’s colab 311 Denver poster. Enjoy!
There’s so much I can say about this piece and so much we put into it. When I first began creating artwork for the 311 Summer Tour I had no idea just how great it would be. When Mike came to me and asked us to be a part of it, I was very thankful. I had only a few pieces to do and I knew what I wanted to do.
One night I get a call from my good friend Munk One, and he asked if he can stop by the studio. It was great catching up with him. We talked about family, work, current projects, etc. We were both working on the 311 tour and he asks me if I would be interested in collaborating with him on a piece, what can say? Fuck yes!!! I’ve always admired Munk, as an artist and a friend. His work, his art, his stories, nothing short of brilliant. I was excited to see what we could come up with.
At the time I was in the middle of working on my other 311 prints so Munk started pitching ideas. The one that stuck was this idea of a gateway, like in the “The Never Ending Story” – two women face to face holding up the 311 logo. As we continued to create the story, we decided that (being in Colorado) we should somehow incorporate the steps this state took into making Marijuana legal. Marijuana has always been an illegal substance, illegal “drug” and even though I’m not a smoker, I see the benefits of it. Plus, honestly, like Katt Williams has put it, “It ain’t no drug, it’s just a plant, it just grows like that. And if you just happen to set it on fire, there are some effects. That ain’t the same as drugs. Drugs you have to do some shit to it, baking soda water, stir it up, I don’t know the recipe, I’m just sayin”. So yes, the mystical leaf and it’s healing powers made it’s way into the story we continued to illustrate.
After we had the stage set, we went on to pencil each side and individual story. It was like magic, the piece found a way to come together on it’s own. First Munk came back with his sketch, I was in awe! Everything I could imagine his girl to be it was, and more. I kept going on my piece…
I decided to continue the story of the Owl Queen. I felt that she fit here, plus, it was the last print I would do for the tour so I felt that ending it with the beginning would feel nice. After that we inked the pieces and brought them together. Munk’s inks are immaculate, the whole thing was great to look at in this stage. The two ladies now together, embracing the unknown, knowledge, strength, space, time, life, death, humanity and everything bigger and beyond. It was all there, we just needed to add the color…
We knew we wanted to do something that popped, we felt the brilliant fluorescent colors could help tie it all together and it just fit, a classic rock poster feel. We went back and forth a few times, adding, changing, tweaking colors around to make it just right. We even sent it the printers a few times as we kept seeing things we wanted to add. It was so much fun! Aside from the overall story, there are some little gems in there, I’m sure some of the fans have already seen them! This is definitely one of my favorite pieces I’ve had the privilege to work on. So much within it and so much of ourselves.
Thank you Munk!!! Thank you 311, management, and all you crazy 311 fans! Hope you all enjoy -Maxx242
**We will have a limited number of these posters for sale through our online store as well as Munk’s online store – details coming soon!**
Maxx put together a writeup about his and Brandon Heart’s inspiration for their 311 Chicago, IL Colab Poster. Hope you enjoy!
With every piece comes a story, and with this piece Brandon and Maxx came together to display a story of the inspiration that death offers life. As dark as this image looks at first glance, it’s actually about a gift that we are all given. This piece was inspired by experiences in each others lives and the 311 song “Beyond The Gray Sky”.
With Life comes death, and in life we all find struggle and pain. But through it all, there will always be something or some one to be thankful for. And even in those dark times when we’re all alone, we need to remember…whether its the dancing tune of a beautiful song, or the image and scent of an off colored wild flower, there is life still to be lived. Always look deep within yourself, find the heart, the courage of a lion, the wisdom of an owl, and defy what can not be done. Fight for today, fight for tomorrow, “One day, you will see the clear blue, Beyond the Gray Sky”.
Brandon, Maxx and all of us at F4D Studios would like to thank 311 and the amazing 311 fans for allowing them to a part of this tour. We hope you guys enjoy the poster as much as we did creating it! Thank you!

Maxx put together a writeup about his inspiration on his recent 311 Tulsa, Oklahoma poster. Enjoy!
I wanted to give a brief description of where these two pieces came from but first I’d like to say thank you to 311, Mike, and all the 311 fans for being so awesome and allowing me to be a part of your show experience. Thank you!!
So the story of the Owl King and the Owl Queen actually started with the Owl Queen. When Mike asked me to be a part of the Spring and Summer tour I had these ideas in my head of a piece I really wanted to do. I took my favorite 311 songs (Amber and Love Song) and put them together. So I started with the Owl Queen. She embraces the strength, the knowledge, the heart, and the beauty that is a woman. She protects her King, her love. He is the sword and she is the shield. Like a ram he fight battles for her, for them, and still they embrace the calm of the deer in the forest. Together they embrace the idea of Love as depicted in the song.
After I established the Owl Queen, I was then able to portray the Owl King as depicted in the first piece. I then started to break it down, adding more of the band within these pieces and still keeping my story as an artist. 311 is found a few times through the pieces and there are a few other symbols that I use continuously. With death and the world around them, they move forward, growing, living, loving. And when their time passes, their bones and their story will still remain. The story of the Owl King and the Owl Queen.
Ok, enough sappiness, there is the story, and again, there are few more repeated images that some may recognize in there. I had a lot of fun with these pieces!!!
Thank you again everyone! hope you enjoy!
